Making your house your canvas

From midcentury furniture to abstract art, David Bearden is a collector and his Langston Lofts condo is his gallery.

The two-story space on V Street NW, which Bearden bought in 2006, works well as the backdrop for his modern, minimal tastes: It has soaring windows, exposed ductwork and an open stairway made from steel beams.

"I was searching for that truly modern, loft-like space -- it's a different feel than a typical apartment space," says Bearden, an environmental policy analyst for the Congressional Research Service. "The purity of the lines of the space really spoke to me."

Bearden filled the space sparsely, so the artistry of each piece of furniture could make its own statement. He placed classic Eames armchairs in the living room, in ivory leather instead of the usual black, which he says is too serious. He added a 1956 Eames sofa, which is much more comfortable, he says, than those lumpy, overstuffed ones most people have.

He hung a George Nelson pendant light over the Zero dining table by the modern Spanish company Stua, with more Eames chairs surrounding it.

Upstairs, Bearden proudly displays a horsehide chaise by Le Corbusier.

"I definitely like as minimal ornamentation as possible," he says. The result is a soothing atmosphere that allows him to clear his head after hectic days at work.

"It allows me to recuperate and re-energize," he says. "It's a clutter-free space where the energy flows freely and you can relax."

Bearden moved into his condo with a solid grounding in midcentury-modern furniture design, but he needed help when it came time to hang art on the walls.

"David was already collecting art, but he was focused on photography," says D.C. artist Mike Weber, who consulted for Bearden. "He basically pulled me in to expose him to other forms of artwork and other forms of media."

"I've always been drawn to abstract pieces," Bearden says. "I like the whole concept of abstract painters moving away from trying to depict subjects in their realistic form."

Weber introduced him to the work of Judy Hintz Cox, an artist from Centreville, Md., whose imposing 8-foot vertical painting can be seen on the wall that's visible to both the upper and lower levels of the condo. Also prominent is an 8-foot horizontal work over the stairwell by Arizona artist Sarah Stockstill. Weber's own art is represented, too.

Bearden's art collection has grown to the point where he can store works and rotate them, Weber says. (And, indeed, he does: Bearden uses his office at work as "storage" for furniture and art he isn't using at home.)

"I wanted a place that could have that feeling like you're living in a gallery," Bearden says. "That's nurturing to me."

When it comes to using pictures on a blog, most of us rely on our amateur point-and-shoot skills to bring you an image of a beautiful room. At times photos are provided, or we snatch them from elsewhere on the Web. But none of us, I think, ever has the money to actually hire a photographer to shoot a house for us so we can blog about it.

That’s why I was so excited when Morgan Howarth called me recently. He was one of our best photographers from Washington Spaces, who probably shot more covers than anyone else. He teaches a class on architectural photography, and he wanted to know if I knew of any beautiful spaces that he could bring his class to shoot. His students get practice, and I could get free, professional-grade photography, all orchestrated by him.

Well, twist my arm, Morgan. Stay tuned for blog posts in the next week or two that will feature his students’ photography. In the meantime, I wanted to share some of his work — any of you who have ever snapped a room knows how difficult it is to make a picture translate the from what you see with your own eyes. Morgan just makes them sing.

Washington Spaces Magazine Celebrates their Fifth Anniversary

At least 200 of the region’s best designers, architects, builders, and home-interior tradespeople gathered to help us celebrate – and to tour Turnberry’s fabulous $7.1 million Tower Suite, which is situated above the penthouses.

Imagine waking up to views of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Kennedy Center, or sipping wine in the living room as you gaze down at what look like strands of diamonds and rubies streaming back and forth over Key Bridge and the inky Potomac River below, while the lights of Georgetown twinkle in the background.

The walls of the unfinished space were lined with gigantic images of the magazine’s 31 covers to date, and everyone was asked to vote for their favorite.

The winner, shot by photographer Morgan Howarth, was our striking Fall 2008 cover of Architect Lavinia Fici Pasquina’s house in Bethesda, MD.

This cover is among the few we’ve ever done of a home’s exterior, which caused a bit of a debate when we were choosing it, but now that the votes are in, we’re glad we did.

A 1970s-modern house, tucked among bungalows in Arlington’s Clarendon community, recently got a sleek renovation from Architect Ben Ames and Interior Designer Catherine Hailey. The homeowners wanted to enlarge the kitchen and add a family room and home office. Amestudio Inc. and Hailey Design LLC did just that – and much more. Ames completely reconfigured the first floor, with the exception of the library. He added a family room to the rear of the house that flows seamlessly from the now-enlarged kitchen, plus a home office in a tower with huge windows on three sides. Hailey helped the couple select furnishings for the house that pop with personality. One wall in the wife’s home office is a shocking pink called Hot Lips.

A win-win situation arose when St. John’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown offered its rectory to be used for the 2009 DC Design House: The rectory got some sorely needed TLC, and the Design House raised more than $100,000 for the Children’s National Medical Center.

This beautiful baby was born here and now she’s back!” Lorna Gross of Savant Interior Design says of her client, Sylvia Davis. In fact, Davis was born at Columbia Hospital for Women, which was one of the oldest hospitals in the District when it was closed in 2002 and converted into condominiums. Davis is not only back at her birthplace, but living in the handsome penthouse of what is now called The Columbia Residences of Washington, DC.

This was my first band shot from my studio in Portland, Maine. I don't remember telling the band exactly what I was going to do.

My first step was to video tape them in the studio behind a large plate glass window so if I wanted they could press their faces up against the TV tube. Most of the band members were looking at me like I had a pointed head...very skeptical.... I decided to move on to having them doing 30 second holds at various poses. This would be important later because that's a live video image pumping threw that deconstructed TV chassis so I needed the video image to be still through out the exposure.

The background was my studio in Maine. I am afraid I forgot the name of the band member on the left but I think he was a rocket scientist in real life so I recruited him to help me get the TV to actually work with a VCR and have a pretty good image. I took a giant console TV (the size of a small car) I found at a salvation army store, deconstructed it, built an angle iron frame and added wheels. The scientist told me that I could have electrocuted myself with very little effort.

The final exposure was the working TV connected to a VCR with one of the chosen video segments of them posing very still F 22 , 5 second exposure, on 4x5 color transparency film with a Sinar F-1 camera 150mm Fujinon lens. This was before The major digital investment.

One Speedotron strobe behind the TV to light up the back walls of the studio. I used 12"x12" Plastic mirrors I found at Home Depot to reflect light from the background strobe into the front of the TV just to add some detail.

We could describe Mr. Howarth's work with a bombastic artist statement like ..... Morgan Howarth's work investigates the nuances of pixels through the use of recognized icons and close-ups which emphasize the artificial nature of digital media. Howarth explores abstract and Pixelated images as motifs to describe the idea of cyber-intuitive reality. Using images as patterns, Howarth creates meditative environments which suggest the expansion of culture...

But that's just not his style. The truth is, he came upon this technique by accident while cataloging images to add to his portfolio. "I have only found a few images that can survive this technique and unfold something new to the viewer from near and at a distance." The layout out of this book was to illustrate the gallery, detail, and "at a distance" view of each image.

We hope you will enjoy this collection of images as much as we did bringing them to you.
